Alex Smailes is a photojournalist with the international photo agency Corbis Sygma. He has covered assignments in the Middle East, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Kosovo. He was the sole reporter in war-torn Chechnya at the start of the last offensive, and obtained an exclusive interview with the rebel leader. Last summer, Smailes travelled through the mountains of Spain and the Caucasus region from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan for Oxfam. He is currently working on a photographic journal about Trinidad and Tobago.
